It surprises many people, but winter is often the most humid time of year inside UK homes. Even though the air outside is cold, humidity indoors can rise quickly.
Main reasons humidity rises in winter
- Windows stay closed. This traps moisture from cooking, showers and breathing.
- Heating dries clothes faster. Laundry releases litres of moisture into the air.
- Cold surfaces create condensation. The moisture then evaporates back into the room.
- Poor ventilation. Bathrooms and kitchens often lack adequate extraction.
What you can do
- Use a dehumidifier for one to three hours daily.
- Ventilate briefly after showers and cooking.
- Keep trickle vents open.
- Dry clothes in one room with the door closed and a dehumidifier running.
Once humidity drops to around fifty percent, condensation and damp smells usually disappear.
